According to the Ethiopian Constitution, the party that has majority in the parliament presents its Prime Minister to the House of People’s Representatives for approval. Accordingly, Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) which has an overwhelming majority in the House presented Hailemariam as the new Prime Minster of Ethiopia, which the House endorsed unanimously.
While presenting Hailemariam to the parliament, representative of EPRDF, Demeke Mekonnen mentioned Hailemariam’s academic and career background at both regional and federal levels as successful.
Hailemariam served as President of Arbaminch University, Deputy Head and Head of the South Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and Peoples State, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, among others. He is also serving as the Chairperson of the South Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement and EPRDF now.
Hailemariam earned his second degree in sanitation engineering as well as in leadership.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the great privilege given to me today following the decision by the ruling party to serve this great people. It is really a great privilege,” Hailemariam said in his speech after taking oath in front of the parliament.
He also vowed to make the legacy of the great leader, the late Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi continued in various activities of the nation.
Hailemariam stressed the need to accelerate ongoing development projects including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project with the full participation of the people.
The Prime Minister mentioned works need to be done in various sectors to make the nation a middle income country in the coming ten years as envisioned earlier.
Housing and transport infrastructure projects in Addis Ababa would be given attention to be pursued as planned earlier, he said.
The new Premier said Ethiopia would continue its positive role in continental and international issues as this was pioneered by the late Prime Minister.
Ethiopia would continue its effort of peace and stability in neighboring countries; Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan, he said.
The government is ready to work with various institutions of democracy including the media, peaceful and legal opposition political parties and professional associations, among others, he said.
Hailemariam Presented the Minister of Education, Demeke Mekonnen to the parliament as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, which the House approved with full support. Demeke also took oath before the parliament to serve the nation faithfully.
Demeke who is a chairperson of the Amhara National Democratic Movement and Deputy Chairperson o EPRDF has also served in various government positions including Deputy Head of the Amhara Regional State.
